Energy company AGL is fighting a $25 million penalty imposed by a court for continuing to deduct payments from hundreds of welfare recipients after their accounts were closed.

Collapsed construction and maintenance company General Trade Industries has lost its bid to revive abandoned claims against AGL in a nearly four-year old contract case over work on two Queensland gas plants, with a judge finding the company has had “more than a sufficient opportunity to plead its case”.

Three AGL Energy subsidiaries have been ordered to pay $3.5 million in penalties for breaches of energy rules that led to a statewide blackout in South Australia.
