Nine will pay $3 million to settle a class action over its coverage of litigation related to the 2004 Palm Island riots, it has been revealed, after the class action failed to suppress the settlement sum.

Sydney barrister Gina Edwards has been awarded part of her costs in an indemnity basis after securing $150,000 in damages in her defamation case over Channel Nine’s coverage of her battle for custody of famed social media pooch Oscar the cavoodle.

Amid allegations of inappropriate behaviour by Nine’s former news director, plaintiff law firm Maurice Blackburn says it is representing “a number of women” in the television industry who are pursuing sexual harassment and discrimination claims.
